VCON 16
Dates: May 27th-29th, 1988 VCON 16 boasted "the science in science fiction" as its theme. It featured slide shows on the history of space exploration by Sidney Trim, discussions of particle physics and cosmic strings by John Cramer and of propulsion systems and drive systems by Brian Tillotson, demonstrations of computer graphics, and a talk on submarine robotic controllers by Eric Jackson of International Submarine Engineering. Panels covered such topics as "Where has the Science Gone?", "Is the Scientific Revolution Slowing Down?", the scientific method, neural networks, artificial intelligence, "stupid science" (SF blunders), the effects of new technologies on publishing, and the chances of finding other intelligent life in the universe. But perhaps the most "explosive" and memorable presentation of all was by BCSFA's own "Mr. Science" (Al Betz) who demonstrated a nuclear reaction gone awry.
